Happy Trees grow from Healthy Soils at Sustainable Tree Care
We are pioneers in the science of soil health and work closely with new research developed throughout the world to help offer your trees the best chance in life. We can help your young trees reach their potential or sustain an established tree well into the future. Trees in the urban environment face a constant struggle to survive compared to trees in a natural forest setting. Urban trees endure an array of urban vectors including soil compaction from vehicles and pedestrian traffic which can reduce the small air pockets within leading to impervious growing conditions. They face other challenges like reduced natural mulch and organic matter accumulation, competition from exotic grasses and weeds, limited growing conditions and space, root damage from development, pollution and pesticide contamination, removed top soil layers from development and erosion, tree vandalism and general poor treatment. The list goes on an on… If you care about your trees and garden please consider our specialised soil treatment services.
Soil and tree health treatments These treatments are beneficial for maintaining a healthy tree and assisting a tree in poor health or condition. If your tree is showing a decline in health, canopy defoliation or canopy dieback it may be eligible for a specialised soil health treatment. Unfortunately these symptoms may also relate to a disease or pest affecting the tree and an assessment is always recommended by a level 5 Diploma qualified Arborist before undertaking any soil/health treatment options.
Our treatments include,
Watering programs water stress can sometimes be the reason for rapid decline in your trees health and condition. Unfortunately these symptoms can present themselves once damage has been done so it is important to regularly observe your trees and gardens for any visible changes in their appearance.
Some examples of when watering could be beneficial to your trees and gardens
- A particularly hot or dry season can trigger the need for additional watering. - A recent change to the trees growing environment from nearby ground disturbance. - The recent removal of adjoining shade or shelter to the tree/s. - A disturbance to the natural water course of the tree.
Mulching of the trees root zones Mulching can greatly contribute to the soils health providing nutrients to the root zones via decomposition, promoting water retention, controlling erosion, alleviating soil compaction, controlling weeds and the need for poison treatments, damage from mowing and maintenance practices, aesthetical improvements to gardens and the landscape. The type of product used and the ongoing maintenance is also a key factor in successfully applying mulch for the benefit of a tree, garden and soil health. Vertical and radial mulching treatments This more invasive specialized treatment is a soil improvement process where a selective blend of aged mulch and rich compost matter is implanted deep in and around the trees crucial feeding root zones. This allows the trees roots to access the beneficial qualities of the organic mix quickly and efficiently which can dramatically improve the tree and soil health. This treatment also aids in compaction and contributes to the overall soil health by promoting important beneficial fungi and microorganisms.
Root plate injections and organic fertilization Injection or deep watering treatments use a high pressure spike to penetrate the upper layer of the soil profile immediately delivering a rich organic fertilizer treatment directly to the roots of your trees and gardens. We use a specially developed blend of organic liquids including Seaweed solution, fish emulsifier, worm castings, molasses, and vital minerals to give your trees and gardens an instant boost in health and vigour. This treatment also aids in compaction and contributes to the overall soil health by promoting important beneficial fungi and microorganisms. Nutrient box installationThis process is recommended for sites with limited space for other discussed soil and tree health treatments. If the root zones are constricted by property boundaries or hard stands the installation of nutrient boxes may be recommended. Installed near the feeding root zones of your tree/s or garden the nutrient box is site specific container in which organic matter is added for eventual decomposition. The box acts like a composting bin with the bottom directly contacting the soil allowing the trees feeding roots to access the decomposing organic mix within. The box is often replenished with appropriate organic composting materials to provide an ongoing nutrient availability for your tree/s. Complimentary understory plantingsThis is the process of installing site specific understory plants in conjunction with other soil improvement treatments like mulching or root plate injections. The understorey plantings work simultaneously with other treatments to help improve the soil health by promoting beneficial fungal and microorganism activity.
Soil + Air + Organic Matter = Water penetration = Root growth = Life!
